Under the tomato plants that were growing until they blocked the sunlight from the tomatoes that dwelt in the depths (they were all spread on the ground, not upright), growing until they were as bushy as a beard, growing until they finally blocked our garden path, underneath all the crawling leaves that were desperately trying to reach across to a new destination, were small, red, ripe, healthy little tomatoes.
So we scampered out eagerly after dinner one night and gathered only the best ones for dessert instead of cake.
Our plant was like a rain forest; it was very dark at the bottom, little rays of light peeked through at the 'medium' layer, and the top grew the largest.
The biggest were sugar-sweet, much better than the ones at Costco, and it was one of my most favorite desserts at all times.
